Early this morning, Snohomish County Fire District 1 reported an apartment fire causing more than $120,000 in damages and displacing three people.
Leslie Hynes, with FD1, said the fire occurred around 3:30am, in an apartment complex in the 7600 block of 230th Street SW.
“Police arrived on the scene first and reported flames coming from a second-floor unit in one of the buildings," said Hynes.
Edmonds Police Officer Jodi Sackville begin running from door to door, waking residents and helping them evacuate the burning building.
Officer Sackville was taken to Harborview Medical Center where she was treated for minor smoke inhalation. She has since been released from the hospital and is expected to be back at work tomorrow, according to Sgt. Mike Blackburn, spokesman for the Edmonds Police Department.
“She did an outstanding job of alerting residents to the fire and making sure everyone got out safely,” said Hynes.
It took firefighters less than 20 minutes to get the fire under control.
“They kept the flames from spreading to other apartments. All the fire damage was in one three-bedroom apartment,” Hynes said.
Investigators were unable to determine exactly how the fire started, but Hynes says discarded cigarettes may be to blame.
Support 7 and Red Cross responded to assist the three young adults who have been displaced.
