Muralist Brier completes with "An Evening in Edmonds"
Arts & Culture

"It never seemed quite complete," Edmonds muralist Pat Brier, quipped.  Brier is the designer of the Edmonds Mural Society's first mural, "A Day In Edmonds," which was raised last fall.  "People over and over said the same thing to me," Brier commented, "'It's beautiful.  Why's it so small?'  So, this year, I submitted a concept that would double the size of the original and complete the picture."

"It's a beautiful work, isn't it?" Edmonds Mural Society spokesman Jeff Stilwell said.  "The way she took the original concept of a day in Edmonds and completed it with a night in the same city.  The board was thrilled when she submitted the concept."  Both murals are montages of photographs of current day Edmonds that have been woven together into one work of art.

"Part of the charm with these two murals," Stilwell said, "is that they celebrate an art form that Pat pioneered."  He added, "In fact, the form is so new that we had to come up with a name for it."  Brier commented, "It's kind of like a digital conceptualization of a story.  All the time, when I stop to think about it, it's like a story and the interpretation is up to the viewer."

Weather permitting, the mural will be installed Saturday, August 28, alongside the original mural, on the south side of Sound Styles clothing boutique in downtown Edmonds.  Rather than painted on the wall, this mural is being installed using a process developed by 3M known as "wall-wrap."  "Essentially, the image gets transferred to strips of vinyl 9 feet tall," Stilwell said.  "Then it's melted onto the wall by a 3M certified installer.  It's quite a fascinating process.  Very expensive, though," he added.

"It was such an honor to be chosen for this," Brier said.  "Its very much a dream come true for me.  Thank god for the Edmonds Mural Society."    "An Evening In Edmonds" is the fourth of five murals being raised this summer by the Mural Society.  Currently seeking 501c(3) status, the Edmonds Mural Society is entirely volunteer-run and relies exclusively upon the donations and the support of its dues-paying Members.
